OUR ETHOS

VISION / MISSION / VALUES

Blackstar’s Vision is to stimulate the transition to sustainabilityTo caffeinate the movement towards a sustainable economy. We understand our business to be a vehicle for change and we believe that great coffee can change the world.

Our goal is to create positive impact through the culture we are creating. Operationally we are moving towards more sustainable business practices. From choice of suppliers, to composting our coffee waste and promoting re-use cups. We also aim to join with others in this movement, to inspire hope and to create a spark. This is the ‘stimulate’ aspect, much more than profiteering.

‘Transition’ refers to the journey and accepting that change is a process. We recognise that just because we can’t do everything now, doesn’t mean we can’t do something now. As long as we’re on the way and moving as best we can.

Lastly, “sustainability”. The much over-used and under-acted upon S-word. We interpret it holistically and based on the five capitals of sustainable development: personal, social, physical, environmental and financial. These five dimensions cover all aspects of the kind of sustainability we are working towards in our business, in our own lives, and in the world around us.

TRADE JUSTICE

We buy green coffee in alignment with the following non-negotiable's, as outlined in our Ethical Procurement Policy:

A. Integrity, ethics and fair conduct throughout the supply chain

B. Traceability through a demonstrated direct relationship with farmers

C. Fair price to coffee producers.

D. Ethical labour and human rights practices throughout the chain of supply such as gender equality practices

E. Fair wages and working conditions for farm labourers.

F. Environmental management and sustainable practices.

We screen our suppliers to ensure that they operate in accordance with these standards.

Where possible we purchase directly from the coffee producers themselves. And where this isn’t the case we commit to only buy from importers that have a direct relationship with the farmers and co-operative’s. We also place high value on community, environmental and specialty coffee projects funded and supported by our suppliers.

We’re very proud to be partnered with the following amazing green coffee suppliers, each of whom are very committed to the wellbeing of the growers they are partnered with. Several of our import partners are from coffee producing families themselves and have settled in a Australia to help make a future for their communities.
